We are both grateful to the disparate band of performers and boubly so that one of the versions of the songs, Boyzone’s ‘No Matter What’, has already become one of the biggest hits either of us has had. For it is an album of a new musical with the songs recorded in their own right and not in the context of the show. All of the artists wanted to do their own interpretations of our songs, so this is in no sense whatsoever a ‘cast album’ and in that regard this initial recording of ‘Whistle’s’ songs is something of a first. Sadly today musicals don’t often produce contemporary cover versions, let alone hits, so we were prepared for a mass series of polite backdowns. We said that the songs we were writing were for a new musical, ‘Whistle Down the Wind’. Suddenly it appeared that all our artist friends from our vastly different, yet surprisingly close backgrounds seemed to be on the line. Had we any new song lurking about? Meantime Jim was similarly questioned by his long-time colleague Meat Loaf. Soon after it was first rumoured that we were going to work together, Andrew got a phone call from Steve Gately of Boyzone.
